Joanna Beal, Fiber Artist @ Creative Growth since 2015
Born 1989 in Chicago, Illinois, Jo Beal is a fiber artist. She begins a new piece with an underlying structure, in many cases a rod or frame, before carefully wrapping it in layers of thread and yarn until the underlying structure is obscured and the thread becomes a sculptural element. Beal pays particular attention to textures, and chooses threads with varying line qualities, from fuzzy mohair to the defined line of sewing thread
Dee Hoover, Joanna Beal's mother and former Creative Growth Board Member
Dee Beal discovered Creative Growth shortly after moving to California in 1997 with her husband, Steve Beal, and their two children. They had relocated from Chicago, where they both worked at the Art Institute, after Steve became Provost at the California College of Arts and Crafts (now California College of the Arts). Many faculty and students there were connected to Creative Growth and introduced Steve to the center. He then introduced Dee. Their interest in Creative Growth was both personal and professional. Their daughter, Joanna, has an intellectual disability, and both parents had long careers in the arts. Steve joined the Board of Directors, and when he later became president of CCA, he stepped down and suggested Dee take his place. She served on the board for six years, including two as secretary. At first, they didn’t imagine Joanna would become an artist. She was young and had little interest in art. But Dee brought her to the Saturday youth program just to explore. Joanna entered with reluctance, but two hours later, she didn’t want to leave. That day changed everything. Joanna soon began identifying as an artist.
Shui Wah Poon, Artist @ Creative Growth since 2017
Born in Hong Kong in 1964, Shui Wah Poon creates highly detailed images of animals, mostly a wood-burning tool on plywood or leather. Poon remains undaunted by the laborious process, which creates portraits that are both textural and visually impressive.
Adrianna Sorondo, Creative Growth Facilitator
Adrianna Sorondo is a textile and ceramic artist/facilitator and CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) at Creative Growth Art Center. As an American Sign Language-fluent facilitator, she works closely with the d/Deaf+ community at CG and beyond.
